The Old Town is Stevenage’s best kept secret but a warm welcome awaits for visitors. Old Stevenage was the site of the original Saxon settlement and has been influence by every great period of history since. Now a conservation area, it retains its character as a village street and the coaching influence can still be seen. Today there are a wealth of vibrant shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy. Free parking is available nearby. Picturesque Middle Row was rebuilt after a major fire in 1807 and other attractive buildings include the nearby White Lion pub where prisoners from the Napoleonic war were rested in the cellars on their way to northern camps. A Secret tunnel ran between the pub cellars and the nearby Cromwell Hotel where the prisoners were unloaded. Both cellar and tunnel are in existence today. The Old Town still also retains its two day Charter Fair which takes place in September and has taken place every year since the Middle Ages. Another eccentricity of the Old town is the coffin of Henry Trigg. Terrified of grave robbers Henry, who died in the 18th century decreed that his remains should rest in the rafters of his barn. The building is now the National Westminster Bank but Henry’s coffin remains there still. A plaque on the wall of The Grange, formerly "The Swann inn", commemorates a stay by the seventeenth-century diarist, Samuel Pepys who played bowls on the attractive nearby Bowling Green | ||
