This is the story of the growth of Leeds as an industrial city, from the creation of Maurice Paynel’s new town in 1207 to the present day.

Leeds began as a small market town, which gradually became an important centre for the marketing of woollen cloth. After the Industrial Revolution it was transformed into a major industrial city which was known as 'the city that made everything.'

Find out about the reasons why Leeds became such an important industrial centre, the eighteenth century woollen industry, and the men who pioneered the industrial revolution in Leeds. Illustrations from nineteenth century business guides tell us what the old factories looked like, and the variety of goods they made.

The story of industrial Leeds is also about the decline of manufacturing industry in the twentieth century, and of how, through the growth of new industries, Leeds has once again become a major industrial city. The Markets

When people talk about Leeds markets they usually mean the magnificent Kirkgate Market which began in 1822 as an open market in Vicar's Croft, and still exists to-day. But there were other market buildings, like the Central Market and the South Market put up in Leeds in the 1820s. In fact, Leeds has been a market town since 1207, when Briggate was laid out and made wide enough to accommodate the market.

This is the story of markets in Leeds from the first medieval marketplace in Briggate with the cloth market on Leeds Bridge to the Cloth Halls of the eighteenth century, and the building of new markets in the 1820's; and of how Kirkgate market became the main market place of Leeds and how it developed into the market we know to-day The earliest settlement at Leeds developed near to a crossing point on the River Aire, and without the river there would have been no settlement, and no city of Leeds. The river and its associated waterways have been crucial to the growth of the city as a centre of industry and commerce.

The waterfront, where the city and the waterways meet, was for many years one of the most important areas of Leeds, and for many years after that one of the most neglected. Now it is thriving once again.

This is the story of how the waterfront has changed from medieval times to the present day. (The waterfront as described here is the area from the Canal Basin to just beyond Crown Point Bridge.) The Theatres

This is an outline of the history of the major theatres in Leeds, from 1771 to the present day, with information about their location, early management, and the different types of entertainment they put on.

There is an enormous amount of material on the history of the theatre in Leeds, and it has been impossible to cover everything here; smaller theatres and theatre companies have not been included.

The Local Studies Library has a large collection of playbills, which will be soon be available from the Leodis site. It is intended that the history of the theatres given here will provide background information to the playbills collection. Also, the playbills used as illustrations here will be able to be seen on the site.
