A Brighton academic estimates that there are approximately 100 billion pebbles on Brighton beach. It would take one man about 2,500 years counting at one a second to add them all up! The first ever commercial flight was from Shoreham Airport to Hove Lawns on 4 July 1911. The cargo was light bulbs. 3,000 lightbulbs illuminated the Palace Pier when it opened in 1899. Over a hundred years later the renamed 'Brighton Pier' is illuminated by 13,000 lightbulbs. Carriages from the famous 'Brighton Belle' steam train were later used on the Orient Express. Swedish super group Abba won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest in the Brighton Dome with the song 'Waterloo'. Brighton Marina is one of the largest in Europe. It covers 128 acres of water and provides berthing for around 2,000 yachts. 8 million people visit the city-by-the-sea each year. Brighton & Hove is one of the UK's top ten destinations for overseas visitors - 310,000 stay here each year. The city attracts 200,000 conference delegates a year. The city was voted in the top ten in the 2000 Observer Travel Award for Best UK City. The Royal Pavilion attracts 350,000 visitors a year and was nominated "best history and heritage attraction in Britain" by Holiday Which magazine last year. The Brighton Pier is the UK's 4th most-visited leisure attraction. Like many south coast destinations in England, Brighton has a lot in common with its European neighbours. The café culture, good food, bars, beachfront and relaxed pace of life will be familiar to many of our European visitors. Links between Brighton and other European cities and towns are numerous and many are cultural. Here are just a few. Frank Gehry, designer of Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, is set to build a new landmark building on Brighton's seafront. The renowned Canadian architect will reinvent Hove with a 38-storey tower which takes its inspiration from Victorian ladies' costume. Circuit Touristique This is a tourist trail with a difference. Half the trail takes you around the major city sites of Brighton and then you can cross the Channel to France to complete the circuit in the picturesque Normandy port of Dieppe. Information boards, leaflets and signs and plaques guide you around the trail. Brighton Festival, 1-22 May 2004, England's largest international arts festival attracts world premieres and cutting-edge performances to the city for three weeks every May. Komedia One of Brighton’s most innovative and cutting edge performance venues is a significant force at the Edinburgh Festival. Its Aurora Nova festival, staged in partnership with Fabrik Theatre of Potsdam, has won critical acclaim and wowed Edinburgh audiences. Komedia, in the North Laine, is one of Brighton’s best venues to see stand up comedy, live music, cabaret and children’s theatre. | ||
