The first ever commercial flight was from Shoreham Airport to Hove Lawns on 4 July 1911. The cargo was light bulbs.

The Brighton Pier is the UK's 4th most-visited leisure attraction. Like many south coast destinations in England, Brighton has a lot in common with its European neighbours. Frank Gehry, designer of Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, is set to build a new landmark building on Brighton's seafront. The renowned Canadian architect will reinvent Hove with a 38-storey tower which takes its inspiration from Victorian ladies' costume.

Circuit Touristique

This is a tourist trail with a difference. Half the trail takes you around the major city sites of Brighton and then you can cross the Channel to France to complete the circuit in the picturesque Normandy port of Dieppe. Information boards, leaflets and signs and plaques guide you around the trail.

Brighton Festival, 1-22 May 2004, England's largest international arts festival attracts world premieres and cutting-edge performances to the city for three weeks every May.
