Bradford – so much
to do and see!

Back in the good old days of the Industrial Revolution, Bradford’s working people didn’t get many opportunities for a day out because they worked for six of them and on the seventh everything was closed.

A ha’penny gobstopper and a smack round the head with a piece of tripe was the average working-class child’s equivalent of a treat. Fortunately, Bradford Metropolitan District now offers a wider range of stimulating activities some of which are free.

Here, in no particular order, are a few suggestions of where to go and what to do on a day out in Bradford.

A sensation-seeking colleague of mine gets her kicks by shooting the black hole Cobra at Richard Dunn Sports Centre. It’s a 40mph woosh along 40 metres of water slide, an ideal way of splashing a bit of excitement into the day, according to my colleague. The centre, open between 9am and 10.30pm Monday to Friday, has a second themed water slide, the Zambezee, which is nearly three times the length of the Cobra. If you don’t want to travel to the south side of Bradford, Keighley Sports Centre, open between 9am and 11pm Monday to Friday, is also equipped with a 40-metre water slide.

Last year I was obliged to travel by waterbus along part of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. It was a very pleasant, if short, trip. We only went a few hundred yards beyond Salts Mill, but you can go east towards Hirst Lock or west towards Bingley from Shipley Wharfe.

The waterbuses are run by Apollo Canal Cruises Ltd from Easter through to October. Prices and times of departure may be found by calling Apollo on 01274 595914.

If, however, a life on the ocean wave is not your idea of fun and you are looking for attractions with an educational content then why not try a combination of the following half-dozen places which have the added advantage of costing nothing to get in. There’s Bolling Hall in Bowling Hall Road, which combines both medieval and 17th Century architecture, open between 11am and 4pm Wednesday to Friday (Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday noon-5pm).

Or, of you live in the north-western part of the district and don’t want to travel far, there’s Keighley’s Cliffe Castle Museum which was built in the 1830s. Among other things it contains a suite of furnished Victorian rooms, a display of curious rocks and items of local history. It’s open all year round from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sundays noon-5pm.

For those with a taste for country matters Bracken Hall Countryside Centre in Glen Road, Baildon (above Saltaire) offers both static displays and interactive exhibits to do with the natural history, geology, local history and archaeology of Shipley Glen in the vicinity of Walker Wood (notable for its bluebells).

The garden is designed to demonstrate how wildlife can be attracted to household gardens. The centre is open Wednesday to Sunday from Noon to 5pm between May and August.

The Metro District contains many working farms — a fact frequently forgotten by those who think of Bradford primarily as an industrial city.

Bradford City Farm, situated in Illingworth Fields, Walker Drive, Bradford 8, is also a working enterprise but one which welcomes visitors who want to learn more about farm animals. The latter include goats, chicken, a donkey, a Shetland pony and calves. There is a woodland walk and a wildlife pond. The farm is open from Easter to September on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9.30am-4.30pm. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult. Although sections of Lister Park are currently fenced off pending landscaping improvements, the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery remains open to the public throughout the year, Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and from 1pm to 5pm on Sundays.

If travelling is not a problem you could spend part of the day out at Ilkley’s Manor House Art Gallery and Museum, at Castle Yard, Ilkley. The Manor, which stands on part of the site of a Roman fortress, has building work dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries, and contains objects of local history, Roman remains, and works of art. It’s open all year Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm and from 1pm to 4pm on Sundays.

After that why not look in at Bradford’s National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, a national treasure, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-6pm, and holiday Mondays.
